Semiotics is an interdisciplinary field of study that focuses on the examination and analysis of signs and the interpretation of their underlying meanings. Nonverbal communication is a branch of semiotics that encompasses various forms of bodily behavior, including facial expressions, body movements, gestures, and conversational regulators. Additionally, posture, stance, clothing style, facial interactions, bodily gestures, paralanguage, artifacts, and the use of time are considered nonverbal signs that can independently convey messages or enhance the effectiveness of verbal communication. This form of communication performs six functions: complementing, contradicting, repeating, regulating, substituting, and emphasizing. The present study aims to analyze the novel Sabaya Sanjar by the contemporary Syrian author Salim Barakat using a descriptive-analytical method, examining nonverbal communication signs through the lens of Peirce’s triadic theory—icon, index, and symbol. This new reading of the text allows the reader to decode the messages conveyed by the author through nonverbal elements. The findings of the study reveal that by employing nonverbal signs and drawing on Peirce’s triadic model, the author successfully represents psychological, social, and cultural meanings within the deeper layers of the text. |
