Purpose: This study aims to investigate and explain the conceptual dimensions and components of information fatigue phenomenon, identify its characteristics and consequences, and present an integrated model through a systematic review of the research literature. Method: The research was conducted using a systematic review method. Following a rigorous screening process and quality assessment, a total of 75 original research articles published in English were reviewed, based on the inclusion criteria of relevance to the research topic, originality, and full-text accessibility. Findings: The findings indicated that information fatigue is a multidimensional phenomenon classifiable into five component categories: (1) perceptual-cognitive components (e.g., confusion, reduced concentration, analysis paralysis, cognitive overload), (2) emotional-motivational components (e.g., burnout, apathy, desensitization, information anxiety), (3) behavioral-performance components (e.g., information avoidance, early withdrawal, reduced information seeking), (4) physical components (e.g., insomnia, eye fatigue, weakened immunity), and (5) social-communicational components (e.g., erosion of human interaction, institutional distrust, social isolation). Exacerbating factors were identified in four categories: structural-managerial, factors related to technical infrastructure and message content, individual factors, and situational factors. Coping strategies were also extracted at individual, behavioral-managerial, organizational-technological, and social-educational levels. Conclusion: Information fatigue not only affects individual and public health but also has serious implications for social resilience, the integrity of the public sphere, and the formation of shared reality. Coping with this phenomenon requires a multidimensional approach including lifestyle modification, information literacy education, improving platform design, organizational support, and macro-level policy-making. |
